10 am

Ladera Vineyards While traveling in Croatia we met Pat and Ann Stotesbery owners of Ladera Vineyards. We had never heard of Ladera. They told us if we were ever in Napa they would arrange a tasting for us. We did a little research on Ladera and decided to visit Ladera during our recent trip to Napa. We were so happy we did!

ree
ree

Pat and Ann founded Ladera in 1999 and made their debut vintage of Cabernet Sauvignon. Ladera's portfolio showcases a range of wines, but it is their Cabernet Sauvignon that truly steals the spotlight. These wines exude elegance, balance, and a unique sense of place, showcasing the minerality and structure that are the hallmarks of Howell Mountain fruit.

ree

What makes Ladera particularly special is its intimate and personalized tasting experiences. Upon arrival, we were greeted by Andrew who guided us through our tasting experience, sharing the story of the vineyard and the winemaking process. While, Ladera is known for their Cabernet Sauvignon, we were delighted with every wine we tasted. Andrew was exceptional as he guided us through our tasting, advising us which meat or cheese to try to enhance the flavor of the wine. Ladera is a boutique winery you do not want to miss!

This was one of our favorite tasting experiences. Tasting Fees start at $75 per person and are waived with a $150 purchase per person. Ladera does offer a Lobster lunch that includes a wine tasting for $125. We did not do this on this trip, but it is something I would love to try in the future. It sounds wonderful!

12 pm Lunch

The Story of Two Stags Leap Wineries

Did you know there are two wineries that have the Stags Leap name? Yes, it is true. We discovered this when we had made a tasting appointment at Stags’ Leap Winery. After entering our destination into google maps we saw Stag’s Leap Cellars, causing us to question which winery we had made our tasting appointment at. It was at Stags’ Leap Vineyards.

So, what is the story? That is what we asked upon our arrival to Stags’ Leap Winery. Apparently, both wineries were founded around the same time in the 1970s in the Stags Leap district of Napa. They both named their winery after the region where their grapes were grown and wine was made. In 1976, Stag’s Leap Cellars won the Judgement of Paris with a cabernet. This event helped California wines, Napa, to be recognized internationally. It also made the winery internationally famous.

ree

Now the problem begins. There is another winery in Napa named Stags’ Leap Winery. People didn’t realize they were two different wineries and would go to Stags’ Leap Winery thinking they were drinking the wine from the winery that had won the Judgement of Paris.

Consequently, Stag’s Leap Cellars attempted to sue Stags’ Leap Winery for the rights to the name under the assumption they were losing sales from the coincidence. The judge determined that since both wineries had released their initial vintages in 1972 and had been founded at the same time, they were both entitled to the name. However, there was one stipulation: the placement of the apostrophe. Stags’ Leap Winery, after the “s,” Stag’s Leap Cellars before the “s.”

Since the lawsuit, the winery owners have become friends and even made wine together. Both wineries are now owned by large corporations.

You can not go wrong by visiting either winery. They both make a variety of excellent high-end wines. Although, Stags’ Leap Winery is known for its Petite Syrah, while Stag’s Leap Cellars in famous for its Cabernet.

Our visit to Stags’ Leap Winery was wonderful. We sat on the porch of the Old Manor House and heard the story of Stags’ Leap Winery as we sipped their wines. Now, I have to say the gentleman leading our tasting had a slightly different version of the story. He stated that Stags’ Leap Winery was much older, dating back before prohibition. They had been using the Stags Leap name first. After prohibition they forgot to renew their trademark and the other Stags Leap began using the name in the 1970’s. Now you know the story!

There are many beautiful places to stay in the Napa Valley that I have not included in this itinerary. I hope you enjoy your trip to Napa and its many wineries!
